Exploring Mother Goose in art and music

This spring, our Martigny students are exploring Maurice Ravel’s magnificent Mother Goose Suite, inspired by Tales of Mother Goose, Charles Perrault’s collection of classic fairy tales. Created under our partnership with the Verbier Festival, this two-part project is introducing the children to Ravel’s music through a combination of graphic arts, readings, and musical performance

In a classroom exercise on April 24, the children worked with their teachers and a professional artist to illustrate key moments in the five tales depicted by the score: Sleeping Beauty; Little Tom Thumb; Laideronette, Empress of the Pagodas; Beauty and the Beast; andThe Fairy Garden.

On May 7 the students will hear Ravel’s setting of the stories in a concert by a string quartet of talented young musicians from the Verbier Academy, accompanied by projections of the drawings they created in April.
